Insanity and Causes

 A long time ago I read a story about a mathematician who was so addicted to numbers that she eventually went crazy. Back then the topic of madness scared me a little, because, apparently, it could come from nowhere and could affect anyone. But then I learned that we all suffer only for our own mistakes. In this case, madness is the result of a mistake that a person makes - but what exactly is that mistake? What do people do wrong that makes them go crazy?
